Wartales: Professions Guide - How to Unlock Them All (2024)

Most RPGs usually just give you a choice for classes and then they leave you to have fun. However, Wartales adds some layers on top of that with the addition of professions. These professions are jobs that your mercenary party can fulfill that aren’t related to combat. If you want to pick a lock, you will need a Thief. If you want to get some good resources from a mine, you will need a Miner. Professions are extremely important and you will need to carefully choose them since you will be limited until you get more companions. This is why, in this guide, we will explain how all the professions in Wartales work, which ones you should prioritize getting first, how to unlock them, and which classes work best with each one of them.

All Professions in Wartales Explained

Ten professions exist in Wartales that you will need to discover throughout the game:

  • Alchemist
  • Angler
  • Bard
  • Blacksmith
  • Cook
  • Miner
  • Scholar
  • Thief
  • Tinker
  • Woodcutter

At the start, you can only make your companions Tinkerers by inspecting them and selecting the professions icon next to their class. To discover new professions, you will need to stumble into what that profession does.

For example, to discover the Thief profession, you will need to try to steal something. You will then get a choice to make one of your companions a Thief. You can cancel without making anyone this profession and you can make this decision later by inspecting any of your companions.

Professions will also give you special skills, such as bonuses to Strength or Critical Hit. These might be minor at the start, but they will become extremely powerful when you get to the master level.

Alchemist

The Alchemist is the profession in Wartales that will make you health potions (medicine), cures for plague, and skill buffs. You will need an Alchemist if you don’t want to waste all of your money on medicine each time a companion gets injured.

Players can learn the Alchemist profession by entering an apothecary in any town and pressing the craft bench there.

Here are the skill buffs that the Alchemist will get for every level in the profession:

  • Novice – +1 Dexterity
  • Apprentice – +2 Dexterity
  • Experienced – +3 Dexterity
  • Journeyman – +4 Dexterity
  • Master – +10 Dexterity

Since this profession will get an amazing buff to dexterity, it will work best if you give it to an Archer or Ranger. This is because their attacks scale with Dexterity, making them much more powerful if they are Alchemists.

Angler

The Angler profession in Wartales will allow one of your companions to fish at random spots on the world map where there are fishing huts. This can be a great way to get food for your warband.

To discover the Angler profession, you just need to approach one of the fishing huts on the world map. You can easily see them since they are shining spots right next to water.

Here are the skill buffs that the Angler will get for every level in the profession:

  • Novice – +1 Willpower
  • Apprentice – +1 Willpower, +2% Critical Hit
  • Experienced – +2 Willpower, +3% Critical Hit
  • Journeyman – +2 Willpower, +4% Critical Hit
  • Master – +4 Willpower, +6% Critical Hit

Since this profession will increase Willpower and Critical Hit, it will work best with a Ranger or Spearman. Willpower is the skill that will make leadership skills much more efficient. Since the Ranger and Spearman are the only classes that have those kinds of skills and can also profit from Critical Hit increases, they are the best choices.

Bard

The Bard profession in Wartales will allow one of your companions to play songs in the inns of various towns for money and influence. Though it might seem like a weak profession, it offers some amazing stat bonuses for the companion.

To unlock the Bard profession, you will first need to have a Tinker and craft the lute at the Workshop in the camp. To learn the recipe for the lute, you will need to advance through the Knowledge Compendium.

Here are the skill buffs that the Bard will get for every level in the profession:

  • Novice – +2 Constitution
  • Apprentice – +2 Constitution, +1 Willpower
  • Experienced – +4 Constitution, +2 Willpower
  • Journeyman – +6 Constitution, +2 Willpower
  • Master – +7 Constitution, +4 Willpower

Due to the high increase in Constitution, the Bard works best with the Swordsman, Brute, and Warrior. All of these classes need to be engaged in battle at all times and a high Constitution skill will make a huge difference. Combined with the second chance that they get with 15 Willpower, this is a must for a tank.

Blacksmith

The Blacksmith is one of the most important professions in Wartales. It will allow you to make new weapons and armor with all of the resources you got along your journeys.

It is very simple to unlock the Blacksmith profession. You just need to enter a town, go into a smithy, and interact with the anvil.

Here are the skill buffs that the Blacksmith will get for every level in the profession:

  • Novice – +1 Strength
  • Apprentice – +2 Strength
  • Experienced – +3 Strength
  • Journeyman – +4 Strength
  • Master – +10 Strength

Since this profession will give huge buffs to Strength, there are quite a few classes that would work well with it. You can choose the Swordsman, Brute, Warrior, or even the Spearman. All of these scale their damage with Strength, so a bonus wouldn’t be a problem.

Cook

The Cook will help you make very fulfilling food for your party using basic ingredients. This profession isn’t incredibly useful at the start but will become vital in the mid to late game.

To discover the Cook profession in Wartales, you will need to craft a Cooking Pot at the Workshop and place it at the camp. When you interact with it, you will finally learn of the Cook profession.

Here are the skill buffs that the Cook will get for every level in the profession:

  • Novice – +2 Constitution
  • Apprentice – +4 Constitution
  • Experienced – +6 Constitution
  • Journeyman – +8 Constitution
  • Master – +14 Constitution

The Cook is an obvious profession for your tank. Any of the Swordsman, Warrior, and Brute classes work for this one.

Miner

The Miner is a profession in Wartales that will allow you to collect raw resources that are needed at the Workshop and when making weapons and armor.

To unlock the Miner profession, you will have to enter a mine or cave and interact with one of the rocks there. This will allow you to make one of your companions into a Miner and start the mining minigame.

Here are the skill buffs that the Miner will get for every level in the profession:

  • Novice – +2 Constitution
  • Apprentice – +2 Constitution, +1 Strength
  • Experienced – +4 Constitution, +2 Strength
  • Journeyman – +6 Constitution, +2 Strength
  • Master – +7 Constitution, +5 Strength

Since the Miner will get buffs to melee skills, this profession will work best with the Swordsman, Warrior, and Brute. Usually, these three classes benefit from the same skills, as they are extremely similar.

Scholar

The Scholar profession will allow you to decode runes in tombs. It is an interesting profession that will unlock many powerful items and secrets that you wouldn’t have otherwise.

To discover the Scholar profession, players will need to craft the Lectern at the Workshop and place it at the camp. Interact with it and you will get your new profession.

Here are the skill buffs that the Scholar will get for every level in the profession:

  • Novice – +1 Willpower
  • Apprentice – +2 Willpower
  • Experienced – +3 Willpower
  • Journeyman – +4 Willpower
  • Master – +8 Willpower

Since this profession will only improve Willpower, you will need to give this to support troops. The Ranger and the Spearman are the best troops for the Scholar profession.

Thief

The Thief is probably one of the most important professions in Wartales. You will need to get this one from the start, as it allows you to pick locks and steal important items without any real repercussions.

To unlock the Thief profession, you will just have to try to steal something. Interact with a barrel or chest in a location and select the steal option to learn of this profession.

Here are the skill buffs that the Thief will get for every level in the profession:

  • Novice – +1 Dexterity
  • Apprentice – +1 Dexterity, +2% Critical Hit
  • Experienced – +2 Dexterity, +3% Critical Hit
  • Journeyman – +2 Dexterity, +4% Critical Hit
  • Master – +4 Dexterity, +6% Critical Hit

Due to the Dexterity increases, the Thief profession is best suited to the Ranger and Archer classes. They are the only ones that will benefit from Dexterity and they will prosper from the Critical Hit increase.

Tinker

The Tinker is the first profession you will unlock in Wartales, without doing anything. This profession is needed to interact with the Workshop in the camp. With the help of the Tinker, you will be able to craft most of the buildings that you will need for the other professions.

Here are the skill buffs that the Tinker will get for every level in the profession:

  • Novice – +2% Critical Hit
  • Apprentice – +3% Critical Hit
  • Experienced – +5% Critical Hit
  • Journeyman – +6% Critical Hit
  • Master – +12% Critical Hit

Since this class will only increase Critical Hit, it can generally work well with most classes. Usually, try to give it to a Ranger or Archer. However, a DPS Spearman also works if you used other professions on the Rangers and Archers of your Wartales band.

Woodcutter

The Woodcutter does one simple thing: cut down trees for wood. You will need wood for many things and the Woodcutter will be there for you.

To discover the Woodcutter profession in Wartales, you will need to find a sawmill and interact with a wood stump where you can cut wood.

Here are the skill buffs that the Woodcutter will get for every level in the profession:

  • Novice – +1 Strength
  • Apprentice – +1 Strength, +2% Critical Hit
  • Experienced – +2 Strength, +3% Critical Hit
  • Journeyman – +2 Strength, +4% Critical Hit
  • Master – +4 Strength, +6% Critical Hit

By now you must have gotten used to who is best suited for Strength increases. The classes that should get the Woodcutter profession in Wartales are the Swordsman, Brute, and Warrior.
