Looking for letter S activities for preschool? We love choosing from our giant set of alphabet activitieseach week.
I’ve been doing Letter of the Week activities with my 3-year-old for a few months now. Thanks to our many whole alphabet activities, he recognizes all the letters and knows most of his sounds. But we keep follow this structure because it helps me find fun, meaningful ways to do fine motor activities, sensory play, process art, and so much more. Take a peek at our week!
(Update: I published this post years ago when my children were young. Now that I have more time, I’ve created a done-for-you alphabet curriculum perfect for preschool!)
Letter S Activities
For a sensory activity, we made play dough. He and his four siblings spent over an hour playing with our new play dough that we colored with crayons (get the recipe here!). To start him out, I gave him some craft stars to push in the play dough, to reinforce the sound of “s.” After that he was busy with cookie cutters and a plastic knife.
This was a great math and early literacy activity from Fun-a-Day! I printed the free spider counting book, and my son stamped spiders in each web using his thumb. After he counted them, I wrote the number on the line, and he “read” the sentence back to me. I put dots under each word so he could see that each piece of print equals one word.
We reinforced the sound of letter S with these free printable clip cards from Teaching Mama.
I put salt in a baking sheet, and he practiced writing S with his finger. This was a challenge for him (S is a hard letter!), so I was sure to snap a picture when he got it right.
Sliding beads on spaghetti is a classic fine motor activity, and perfect for Letter S week. You could turn this into a math activity by counting the beads or making patterns with them.
You wouldn’t believe how long he stayed busy writing with chalk on sandpaper! He loved slapping the sandpaper with his hand to see the chalk dust smear. Blowing across the sandpaper was fun too.
Whole alphabet activities are so important. He really loves these free letter sound parking lots that I shared on the blog last week.
