What is the Purpose of Groundhog Day?

The purpose of Groundhog Day is to find out if the groundhog sees his shadow after it emerges from its burrow. The idea is that if the groundhog sees his shadow, then that means that there are six more weeks of winter. If the groundhog does not see his shadow, then spring will arrive early. It’s important to note that this is a cultural celebration, a superstition really, and oftentimes the groundhog is not correct.
